Verrucae are warts caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), they most commonly occur on the soles and toes. They are benign tumours and are contagious contracted in moist, damp areas such as swimming pools and communal changing areas. They can be spread to other family members by sharing towels, bath mats etc.
If the skin has been compromised or broken the HPV virus can invade skin cells and incubate. this then causes an overproduction of skin cells the virus then replicates and this causes the typical appearance of verrucae. If Verrucae's don't cause discomfort they normally resolve of their own accord.
It is recommended that all lesions on your feet should be checked by a GP or HCPC registered podiatrist.
